Article Summary

It was a morning QTH visit to Jakartha. I was able to contact Wisnu YB0AZ before the trip and get a background of what is required to operate. Since we do not have a reciprocal agreement between Sri Lanka and Indonesia, it wasn’t possible to operate as YB0/4S7AB. Therefore I had to use my US callsign for this brief operation as YB0AZ/KA5MAL. Below is a video recording of the brief operation.

Having More than 35 years of experience in the Field of Amateur Radio, I have published many articles in prestigious international publications like, QST, CQ-DL, NCJ, Six-News etc.. Here in this web site, these write-ups are intended to give you knowledge about my designs and projects related to the hobby. The articles about foreign HAM activities are intended to share my experience.

Wisnu is one of the very active Hams from Indonesia both in Radio and Administration. He has a nicely setup, well equipped station in Jakartha. He also had a FT847 same rig I had back in 4S7. So I got to use it with his FB antennas to talk back to my HAM friends in Sri Lanka.

Wisnu is an active APRS op too. We had a live demo of his setup and gathered some valuable information about his configurations. This information and knowledge will be helpful in setting up a APRS network in Sri Lanka in the future.

YB0ECT Pri also joined our eyeball QSO.

Later Wisnu took me to the big Electronic gadget mall in Jakartha ‘Glodok’. There were hundreds of Electronic shops selling components as well as rigs and ham radio accessories.

I was able to invite Arman YB0KLI, his XYL and Wisnu for a dinner in my Hotel. Arman is an experienced programmer who has written APRS gateways and tools for Symbian OS. I was lucky enough to test one of his APRS clients in my Nokia Mobile with an external Bluetooth GPS. .
